Open Source Software is software which is developed not by paid drudges working for an elite group, but by interested people spread throughout the entire world.

The basic idea behind Open Source is to take power out of the hands of big corporations, and give it to the users. An open source project is one in which someone conceives of a program that needs to be written, comes up with a basic idea, that throws it out to the world to tinker with and improve.
